Re: GENERAL PLANNING

LAST MINUTE DETAILS 1. If you have running boards, low slung air dams, or anything that hangs low, they all should be removed. The customary trail rule is that, if your don't remove them, the trail will. I've seen running boards get ripped off and its not pretty!!! 2. If you do not have rock rails,...

Re: GENERAL PLANNING

Dave, what do you use for a floor in your shower? The only times I've used my shower tent has been on grass so dirt and runoff wasn't a problem. I have the floor from my old shower tent which basically acts like a kiddie pool and collects the water. It has a hose bib to act as a drain but just for ...

Re: OAUSA Net - April 26, 2018 – Trail Tips, Hacks, Wrinkles

CAMPING SOLUTIONS 1. PAPER TOWEL HOLDER One of the more irritating discoveries while camping is finding your roll of paper towels all over the dirt when you return to camp after a day of exploring. It seems the wind easily unrolls the towels and always leaves them in the dirt. The solution was simp...

Re: MEALS

Dave, 1. Are there any restrictions where we are going regarding the use of open fires or charcoal (for Dutch ovens)? 2. Are we planning on having campfires? I wasn't planning on bringing any Dutch oven equipment due to the weight, need for charcoal, and not knowing about fire restrictions. The sam...

Re: OAUSA Net - April 19, 2018 - 5 Minute Destinations

DESERT WILDFLOWERS Much of the American Southwest has desert areas, whether the Mojave or elsewhere, and spring time bring out the color. Every year is different with something new to offer. Although there has not been much rain here in the southwest, there should still be some areas with decent wi...

WEATHER

WEATHER YES, I know it's two weeks out, but I couldn't resist taking a peek at the NWS prediction for the Parashant. I bookmark a NWS click forecast for Twin Point, which showed the following for this Saturday through Wednesday: Saturday Sunny, with a high near 71. North wind around 7 mph becoming ...

Re: GAS CANS

REMINDER i recommend 6 Jerry cans of gas (5 gallons each.) Water is not availabale in the Parashant, with the exception of natural springs. Relying on springs is risky and we should not depend on them. The only other exception is the Bar 10 Ranch where we will be able to resupply. The Bar !0 Visit ...

Re: GENERAL HAM RADIO & APRS

There are a number of reasons for using APRS, One of the more important ones is to keep track of the other members of the group. If we are spread out for any reason, we will want to locate the lost or injured member. While we should be able to receive simplex beacons from everyone without the benefi...
