Re: OAUSA Net - June 4, 2015 - Comfort Camping

I had a Zodi shower basically melt down (never spend that kind of money on such a thing) . . . most trips I go stinky but when I need to bring a shower, I bring a 7 liter pot and a Coleman shower pump. I fill that pot with water, heat it on the fire or stove and when it hits the right temp, I shower...

Re: 10 Meters in Far Off Places for Fun

Be careful with CB style mag mounts! Some of them are not made to handle the power that Ham radios can produce. The radio can only do 25 watts, the antenna is for 10m and rated for much higher wattage, and the mag mount is just a base (most are rated for 100w or more) I have laying around. My conce...

Re: 10 Meters in Far Off Places for Fun

Well, I tested the HTX10 and it works just fine. I have a ham stick kind of knock off antenna for it and a CB style mag mount for that. I need to put Power Pole connectors on the radio and a power source, likely cigarette lighter. The goal isn’t to drive around, just go up high and see if it works. ...

Re: 10 Meters in Far Off Places for Fun

I picked up an HTX10..old but enough for SSB. Iwill build a few antennas and see what works. I need to test and see what value there is in it but so far .right around 100. I can test in Big Bear for altitude and see what I can do up high. I like doing HF far away but setting up all the wire antennas...

10 Meters in Far Off Places for Fun

So, I was a thinkin! I only have UHF/VHF Mobil in my rig and no plans for upgrading that. I do have an HF setup I can drag out in an Action Packer and set up with a plethora of wire antenna and supports and . . . . but that is often time consuming. One can pick up used mobile 10 meter rigs cheap, li...

Re: General Comments - 2015 Summer Fest / Field Day

Interesting. We’ll see. It is about 3 hours without traffic . . . for me. Not too bad . . . but like 6 hours on a Friday night!

Just curios, why did it stop being held on in SBNF?

Re: General Comments - 2015 Summer Fest / Field Day

Where is it going to be held this year? Back when it was in SBNF, I always wanted to stop by but missed the chance.

Re: $40 APRS plus Upgrades

OK, testing with two rigs with virtually the same setup over the weekend in Saline Valley (Death Valley NP) and it worked great (but for a period where my antenna fell off - - - but I found it). We could see each other just fine for the whole trip. We sent messages and all that just fine. We both us...

Re: $40 APRS plus Upgrades

I am now wireless and hidden. I took a piece of board and painted in black, drilled a few holes, put Velcro on the faces and foam on the edges (so it won make rattling sounds) and then Velco’ed the radio and TNC to the top. On the bottom is a little “power supply” of sorts and a foam “leg” to make i...

Re: $40 APRS plus Upgrades

I cannot commit because I so seldom make the Net anymore. I did communicate with Mobilinkd a bit about the minor issues I encountered. The Baofengs are leaky beasts and so the ferrite bead on the radio cable is key as is wrapping the cable through it (which I had not done). The bead supplied did not...
