Re: First OAUSA Trip

Any ideas on dates?

I'm busy June 7-8 and June 21-22 but the rest of June is open.

Perhaps field day would be a good weekend for the first group outing.

Re: Portable Fridge/Freezers

I have to agree that the Engel refrigerator is somewhat of a luxury but once you have one you'll never want to go back to ice chests. I was thinking of getting one for awhile. When I attended my first Mogfest I saw that most everyone there had one. There was even someone with a Steyr-Puch Haflinger ...

Re: First OAUSA Trip

It will be getting warm for a Desert trip soon so how about Monache Meadows in June or is that getting into mosquito and fly season up there? Another place I've been wanting to see is Laural Lakes up by Mammoth but that would probably present too long of a road trip for most folks in the L.A. or Ora...

Re: Lone Pine to Mammoth?

I did a 3 day rolling run last Labor Day with the Ridgecrest Geargrinders up through the Inyo and White Mountains. We started at Mazourka Canyon which is East of Independence and continued past Andrews Mountain. From there there we took Wyman Canyon into the Bristlecone Pine Forest and finally Silve...

Re: Pinzgauer

Tom, Yes and no. When I looked into my fuel tank through the inspection port the lining was OK. I had expected to see large patches where it had bubbled up and detached from the tank. I later checked with my Uber Pinzgauer mechanic and he said that his experience has been that the red flakes in my f...

PC Navigation Software?

Has anyone done a comparison between Delorme Topo USA and the National Geographic Topo packages? I've been using Delorme mapping software for years. Last year at Panamint Valley Days I ran across a couple of folks using the National Geographic software. They said that all of the trails we drove were...

Re: Off Road Notebook Computer

I've been running a VIA EPIA SP8000 motherboard in a VOOM2 PC case in my rig for about a year now with zero problems. It's important to use a laptop hard drive as 3 1/2" desktop drives can not handle the rigors of off road driving. The power supply is an M2-ATX-HV from http://www.logicsupply.com" on...

APRS Paranoia

I've been playing around with APRS on and off for the last few years. I bought a Kenwood TM-D700A for my rig to run APRS on my off road trips. I've been slow to install the radio because I started thinking about the possibility of some unscrupulous individual monitoring APRS and seeing the coordinat...

Re: "Ollie" (K6JYB) Welcomes You...

I'm glad that Tom sent out the information on this group in his latest customer E-mail message. Part of the reason I bought my rig (see the Pinzgauer post under Outdoor Adventure Vehicles) was to get out and do ham radio in unusual locations. I've only been into off roading for the last couple of ye...

Pinzgauer

Here is my rig. It's an Austrian built 1972 Pinzgauer 710M ex Swiss army. http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee178/bbtehachapi/PB110023-1.jpg These vehicles were being imported in the the U.S. for about the last 8 years as the Swiss army has been auctioning the off. The Swiss bought thousands of the...
