How to find us

Several of us will be running APRS as we travel. For families, friends, and anyone interested, you can follow our progress by clicking on the links listed below.

There are two websites that can be accessed to view our progress, APRS.fi and OpenAPRS. Both sites will show our progress, but they each offer some unique qualities.

APRS.fi seems to register stations faster and is more efficient (IMO) by reporting more stations. I would check APRS.fi first to check our progress. APRS.fi will also keep our tracks much longer than OpenAPRS.

OpenAPRS, on the other hand, offers a very useful and unique feature, which APRS.fi does not. IF you are a licensed Ham, you will be able to send us APRS messages, through the Open APRS website, almost anywhere we will be. If you have not used Open APRS before, you will need to sign up - a process that verifies that you are actually licensed. If you have not sent or received messages through this service, you should start practicing now so that it will work well when you want to use it. This site takes a little "getting used-to". If anyone needs help, post up here. Note that we will be able to respond to your messages as well.

For those who will be running APRS, and who want their progress seen, please post your call sign and any ssid you will be using.

I will be running APRS as well (under KF7FEN), but I'm not sure if I will have GPS to the mobile radio yet. I'm having trouble tracking down a Yaesu GPS-1 (no one has them in stock). I might end up only having it on my VX-8R...

Chazz:

I've added you to the list. Will you be using an ssid?

I wasn't planning on it. It is a lot easier to link from my site to APRS.fi without it, and just make sure only one radio is on (since I only have 2).
