Route Description:
This trail is a strong moderate to a light difficult rating due to the shelf roads and loose shale-covered terrain. A stock 4x4 can make the trip but a novice driver may be a bit nervous. It's 47 miles to the trail head with a gas station at 43 miles in Ocotillo. The highlight of this run will be Painted Gorge (Carrizo mountain). Painted Gorge provides some of the most wonderful geology that Anza Borrego has to offer. Desert USA has the following to say about Painted Gorge,"The Painted Gorge, located on the eastern side of the Coyote Mountains, consists of sedimentary, metamorphic and ingenious rocks. Heat and movement over time has created fantastic shapes and colors. Oranges, reds, purples, and mauves mixed with browns and blacks create a palette of color as the sun illuminates and plays shadows upon this geologic wonder called the Painted Gorge." The begining of the trail passes through Plaster City OHV Area into a wide open area. The graded road soon becomes a trail as it nears the sandy wash of Painted Gorge and quickly enters the canyon. Embedded rocks litter the wash, which eventually turns into a very narrow, rocky, loose shelf road as it nears the summit of Carrizo Mountain. There are great views of the Yuha Desert and Salton Sea along this trail.

This trail is also subject to a seasonal closure for the lambing of bighorn sheep from January to June. So by the time BorregoFest rolls around this area will only be accessible for another two months until June of 2011. As can be seen from the picture below, a simple mistake or lapse in attention can have serious consequences.

POST PRERUN UPDATE:
Because of the size of the group generated for this run and the tightness of the areas on Carrizo Mountain we will more than likely be splitting it up into two groups. This run will be an all up overview of the eastern Anza Borrego State Park. The dirt mileage for the run will be right around 60 miles. The areas covered in this run will be Bow Willow Wash, Arroyo Seco Del Diablo, Fish Creek, Split Mountain, Lower Borrego Valley, Carrizo Wash, the Coyote Mountains, and Carrizo Mountain.

We will be privy to some of the most beautiful places that the extreme southern Mojave and extreme northern Yuha deserts have to offer. We will be driving between an active bombing range and a retired bombing. There will be about a 5 mile section of extreme whoop-de-dos (we will traverse this section slowly. The terrain will include expansive washes, tight slot canyons with varying rock and mud walls , mild rocks, tight shelf roads with scree / shale surfaces, and mild to moderate climbs.

We can guarantee good times and great company (if the above mentioned is your cup of tea). We look forward to this run immensely. We feel this will be one of the best Anza Borrego Tours yet. For pictures from our prerun go to the prerun report thread at the link below. If you have any questions or concerns post up or PM OLLIE in person.

Dang it Ollie, I guess you're gonna have to sign me up for this one too. I just love this area! We can also mix it up a bit with a few other routes I know of in the area. ;)

You got it. If all goes well I was thinking of coming back via Fish Creek and Arroyo Seco... ;)

Yes you certainly could. When coming down off the mountain head north into Carrizo Wash and then under the railroad bridge towards Fish Creek. There's also that gnarly little hill right at the entrance we found on one of our preruns. 8-)
