TRAIL DESCRIPTION:
Located within the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area, you'll need an off-road vehicle to get to this remote location where there is an enclosed field called the "Pumpkin Patch" off the Tule Wash which features numerous pumpkin-sized concretions, or round sandstone formations.
Desert Magazine first published an article about the Pumpkin Patch in 1970, showing a black and white picture of its concretions. After seeing this wonderful photo by David Muench in the January 1981 edition of Desert Magazine it became a major attraction for the area.
This unique landscape is the result of wind and water continuously eroding the surface soil and revealing globular sandstone concretions that look much like pumpkins in size and shape. Such concretions are believed to be formed by the natural cementing of sand particles to a small object such as a piece of shell, a grain of sand or even an insect. Help preserve the Pumpkin Patch and the nearby ridges where new pumpkin-size concretions grow
LOGISTICS:
We will meet at camp grounds at 8:00 Saturday morning. Each vehicle needs a vehicle inspection and all drivers and passengers must complete a waiver of liability. Have sufficient gas for the trip and bring a lunch.
The plan is to travel to the pumpkin patch via the pumpkin patch trail. This is trail has washes, sand, lots of steep ups and downs, and some tight turns – fun but not too difficult. After looking at the Pumpkin patch and lunch we will return via Long Lizard trail. This trail is a bit more difficult.
