It's time once again for the OAUSA version of the outdoor travel advisor. The net will be a great opportunity to get some ideas for future outdoor adventures. The "5 Minute" idea is our way of getting as many participants as possible, as they each have 5 minutes for their adventure. Each will post information and pictures.

Don't be shy - if you have a favorite camping spot, hiking adventure, hunting trip, river rafting trip, 4 wheel drive adventure, or sky diving trip, post up with a description and pictures. As long as it's an outdoor adventure, it's fair game!!! So, join us on the net.

This may be a busy net. We have at least 4 announcements, 3 of which contain information which will be most useful if posted here. The 4th announcement, and perhaps others, will be mentioned on the net.

1. 1. Route 66 Special Event Set for September 9-17

The Citrus Belt Amateur Radio Club of San Bernardino, California will host the 18th annual Route 66 On The Air special event, September 9–17. The event offers radio amateurs a chance to perhaps relive their own Route 66 memories and to celebrate the famed highway’s 91st anniversary. Opened in 1926, US Route 66 was the first major improved highway to link the West Coast with the nation’s heartland; it once served as the backdrop for a popular TV show and has been the subject of songs and stories. There will be 21 stations — two of them “rovers” — operating in or around the major cities along Route 66 from Santa Monica, California to Chicago, Illinois. They will use 1 × 1 W6-prefix special event call signs.

The Route 66 special event stations will concentrate activity on these frequencies: CW — 3.533, 7.033, 10.110, 14.033, 18.080, 21.033, 24.900, 28.033, and 50.033 MH; SSB — 3.866, 7.266, 14.266, 18.164, 21.366, 24.966, 28.466, and 50.166 MHz; Digital — 3.580, 7.070, 10.140, 14.070, 18.100, 21.070, 24.920, and 28.120 MHz. Some participating clubs will also use VHF and UHF repeaters.

Radio amateurs who operate while driving on Route 66 may take part in the event by using the designations “mobile 66” or “/66” after their call signs.

Each participating club will issue its own commemorative QSL card to celebrate this event. Certificates are available.

An unrelated Military Vehicle Convoy On-The-Air Route 66 event will take place from September 16 until October 14. Visit ConvoyOnTheAir.org for operating details.

Product spotlight:

Valve Stems… Not a glamorous item or one that we think about very often, till we have to replace one.

This weekend Tim Fallon KK6NXP & I were on a trip and one of the other members tore his valve stem and we had to replace it. This normally would have been a fairly time consuming project that would have required taking off the tire, breaking the bead, changing the stem, resting the bead, and putting the tire back on. It was a hot day, on a steep, dusty shelf road and replacing the valve stem did not sound like a fun project. Then Tim recalled he had picked up a Colby Valve stem a new Valve stem just out on the market.

The Colby Valve (https://www.colbyvalve.com) is a replacement valve stem that can be done with the wheel and tire still mounted to the vehicle.

We found it very easy to install, adding a little water to the valve stem allowed it easily slide into place. The entire thing took less then 5 min, to get up and running again.

Our real world testing consisted of 4-5 hours of off road driving, 40 miles of road driving aired down at 16PSI, and 265 miles of highway driving on hard tires.

I think this is a great product and highly recommend carrying one in your vehicle; they are reusable, if later, you change it out to a regular stem.

Tim Fallon (TF) had some more questions and reached out today to Colby and they got back to him very quickly.

TF: Are these DOT approved?
CV: DOT actually does not have specifications for tire valves, so there is not a way to get them DOT approved.

TF: How long can an emergency valve be used vs the other models?
CV: The Emergency Valve can be left in the wheel indefinitely, if desired. The creator of the Colby Valve has had Emergency Valves (early editions, too!) in the wheels of his truck for well over a year now. All of our valves can be used as temporary or permanent solutions, even though they are marketed in different ways. For instance, the Ultimate Valves are primarily used to replace standard valve stems before hitting the trails, to prevent issues up-front. However, some customers carry Ultimate Valves with them on the trail and treat them the same as the Emergency Valves, because they carry a socket wrench with them at all times. Let me know if you have any additional questions or need more information about any of the valves we offer!

TF: Do these works the same in subzero? Do they have any issues getting inserted?
CV:They haven't been tested yet in subzero, but all materials are rated to extreme temperatures, including subzero. Trucks on ice often break traditional stems, so we created Colby Valves to hold up better in that specific environment.

OATMAN ARIZONA

Gold mining ghost towns are a significant part of our history. In so many ways they are an insight into America, from the incredible fascination with the glittering valuable mineral to the extreme lengths miners would go to find their strike. Many areas, and many states, owe a great deal to the discovery of gold for it's ability to populate the west. The prospect of great wealth was enough of an incentive for thousands to pack up and leave home. Every gold mining town has it''s own unique story, but they all shared one thing - the prospect of "the big strike"!!! And, it brought them in by the tens of thousands.

Arizona had it's share of gold strikes, but the most famous, and the one that produced more than any other, in the State of Arizona, was from the City of Oatman. It is often referred to as a ghost town, but it doesn't really seem to fit that definition. At its peak, Oatman had a population of around 10,000, but today, and for quite a few years, it has had a population of a hundred or so residents. It exists today mostly as a tourist attraction, but there is still active mining going on.

The first gold was discovered in 1863 (in the middle of the Civil War) by a prospector named Johnny Moss. Two of the claims that he staked were the Moss mine (named after himself) and the Oatman Mine (named after Olive Oatman, whose name was eventually used as the permanent name for the town.) An official town, although comprised mainly of tents, began to form in the very early 1900s, and was then known as Vivian, (after the Vi-vian Mining Company.) In 1909 Vi-vian changed it's name to Oatman, in honor of Olive Oatman.

The origin of the Oatman name is interesting, and, as mentioned above, in honor of Olive Oatman. Oatman was a young Illinois girl who had been captured by Indians during their pioneering trip west 1851. During this captivity she was forced into slavery by her Indian captors. She was later traded to Mojave Indians who adopted her as a daughter, but later released her in 1856 at Fort Yuma. This is a picture of her as an adult (date unknown). Note the chin tattoo, a custom amongst the Mojave Indians.

Gold mining in and around the Black Mountains, where Moss made his original claims, had it's ups and downs until the early 1900s, when things really heated up. The real gold boom began around 1904 and continued until around 1930. During this period, estimates put Oatman's gold production at about $36 million, at the then government controlled price of $20.00 an ounce. Every new strike drew more and more people to the city.

This is a picture of Oatman taken around 1921, before the big fire, which destroyed most of the town. Given its gold production, the town was later rebuilt:

Oatman, today, serves mainly as a tourist destination, with one of its main attractions (in addition to its impressive history) being the wandering, tame burros, which populate the town. Vendors sell burro food (whatever that is) and tourists can be seen hand feeding the critters, who have come to expect it. The burros are "wild" (or as wild as you can get under these circumstances) and nobody rounds them up at night. One word of caution if you visit Oatman - watch where you step!!!

The Oatman Hotel

The Oatman Hotel was built in 1902 and is the largest two story adobe building in Mojave County. It's greatest claim to fame, other than it was one of the very few buildings that escaped the fire of 1921, is the legend that it was the Honeymoon location for Clark Gable and Carol Lombard in 1939. Today it is no longer used as a Hotel, but rather as a museum on the top floor and a restaurant and bar on the ground floor.

Oatman is located about a 45 minute drive from Laughlin, Nevada / Bullhead City Arizona. To do justice to the town, you should give it a day, as there is a lot to see and do. There are two roads that lead to the town from the Bullhead City area - one dirt and one paved. Both are 2WD roads, but the dirt road will jar you a bit. Well worth the trip.

Nevada Portion of the Pony Express Trail

In November last year, I had a taste of a short section of the Pony Express Trail and now would like to explore the entire section border to border in Nevada.
The trail ran between San Francisco, CA and St. Joseph Missouri. It started April 3rd, 1860 and only lasted 18 months.
There were 20 original Pony Express Stations in Nevada, located near water and good feed areas. Most of these were used as stage and mail stops for years after the “Pony” was discontinued. I saw what was left of just one in the sections I did.
I did the section from US95 to US95A near Fort Churchill in November. This is section is recommended for 4-wheel Drive vehicle only as it is in the alkali flats and sinks of Carson Lake. The day we crossed the trail was extremely muddy and very slippery.
I have also done the continuation of the trail from Fort Churchill to Dayton, NV which is very scenic along the Carson River. Most of this is gravel or broken pavement. It can easily be done in a 2 wheel drive vehicle.

Our trip started in the town Trona and took us through Fish Canyon, Goler Wash and on to Barker Ranch. Barker Ranch is located at the western edge of Death Valley National Park. It was the last hideout of Charles Manson and where he and his clan were arrested.

After Barker Ranch we climbed Mengel Pass, then dropped down into Butte Valley.

"Mengel Pass is a popular trail within Death Valley National Park as it connects Panamint Valley on the west end of Death Valley to beautiful Butte Valley on the east side. Along the trail are an overlook of Butte Valley and Striped Butte plus the gravesite of Carl Mengel, a historic prospector from the early 20th century. The trail is no easy feat with its constant changing terrain and difficulty. Some days the trail is a mild path while other days, it can damage any vehicle that attempts the crossing. Due to the changing landscape of the obstacles, Mengel Pass is a fun and challenging run for all comers!

From Butte Valley we entered Silurian Valley, ending our trip in Baker.

This Fish Canyon Marker below reads: "Fish Canyon escape trail. Where Manley and Rogers led the Bennett and Arcand families to safety from Death Valley in Feb. 1850".
