One of my favorite edged implements for dealing with brush, kindling, limbing.

Wikipedia:
The hooked front of the blade is designed to prevent the edge from hitting the ground, which would quickly damage or blunt it. Billhooks were the tool of choice for clearing areas of brush and shrubs, since this activity requires chopping close to the ground.

The use of a billhook is between that of a knife and an axe. It is often used for cutting woody plants such as saplings and small branches, for hedging and for snedding (stripping the side shoots from a branch). The billhook is the European equivalent of tools such as machetes, parangs, and kukris.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Sorry folks, but it looks like our repeater (Keller Peak) took at least one significant lightening strike. As of 20 minutes before net time, the repeater was still down, and if all indications are accurate, we may be in for an expensive repair. I will post more updates as soon as I can get some details.

There may be some changes for next week, so check out this net preview for further information. Everyone - thanks for your understanding!!!

UPDATE

Well, early indications were spot on. As unusual as it seems, southern California actually had a pretty good storm last Thursday. Our repeater is located in the mountains at about 8.500 feet' ASL, and the storm was particularly active there, with a huge amount of lightening, one (or more) of which nailed our repeater.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason why certain parts were fried and certain parts were spared, but it looks like the battery back-up is gone, the generators are gone, IRLP and Echolionk are gone, and some of the circuit breakers are damaged (no surprise,) Unbelievably, the radios were spared and the power was not affected. So, with some new power supplies, we are back on the air again. Unfortunately, if the next storm knocks out the power, we are screwed. And, not sure yet how we are gong to obtain a connection to the Western Reflector. Stay tuned.

Repairs are on the way, but with all the snow up there, it will not happen overnight. Here in La-La land, when it rains '(which it seldom does) it pours. Arrrrgggghhh!!!
