OAUSA Net - May 02, 2019 - New Ham Radios Equipment

#1

Our net this week is New Haw Radio Equipment.
We will be discussing new HAM equipment including radios, antennas, amplifiers, and ancillary equipment. I want to encourage separating the net into a few categories.

1. HT equipment including, SDR radios and other new technologies regarding low power hand held equipment.
2. Base station and HF equipment including multi band radios and amplifiers.
3. Antenas and other equipment including power supplies, battery and solar.

I am looking forward to hearing and learning from everyone on the net about new and promising gear.
I hope to learn about some new items of interest on our NET.
Please feel free to load your favorite new gear and share your thoughts on new gear.
See you on the Trail!

I am looking forward to hearing about any new equipment that anyone would like to share.

I will share this radio that I was given to preview by Kevin (KK6DGL) it is a Yaesu FT 4X. It is a dual band HT that appears to be very well constructed. I have several HT radios and I may need to pick one of these up if nothing else because of its price point. It is well under $100.

I will test this radio tonight so I can see how it does.

Not a new radio at this point but last field day, I upgraded from a Yaesu FT 991 to a 991A.

I really like the new radio for the real time analyzer capability.

SDRplay SDR2

If you like searching around to see what is on the air a very powerful and relatively inexpensive way to do that is with a software defined radio (SDR). I played around with some very inexpensive USB dongle SDRs but found their sensitivity to be lacking.

Last year I received an SDRplay SDR2 for Christmas. So far I've been very impressed by this little receiver. I've just begun to scratch the surface of what this radio can do. The software is what really makes it function.

One interesting test I did was to check out the signal from my car's remote control key fob. I found the frequency and was able to receive it clearly from the discone antenna on my roof while operating it in the house. One thing that surprised me were the number of similar signals I was receiving withing 10MHz or my frequency. I assume it was receiving key fob signals from all over town. It makes you think twice about the possibility of miscreants doing relay attacks to gain access to your vehicle.

Rather than try to explain the radio I suggest going to YouTube and searching for SDRplay SDR2 to check it out.
