OAUSA Net – July 18, 2019 – Wine in the Outdoors

This week’s net will cover the subject of wine.

Wine is a great companion when recreating in the outdoors as long as done responsibly. That means after the day’s activities and in a safe place like around a camp fire. Many people enjoy a glass of wine with their meals while savoring the fresh air and scenery of the great outdoors. In fact, I’ve found that a glass of wine with a home-cooked meal prepared in a Dutch oven while sitting around the campfire with friends is one of the nicer pleasures of life.

Our returning guest and our favorite Wine Master is Lynda KI6SXI. Lynda is a wealth of information on wine and will talk about wine making, wineries, wine tasting, corks, box wines, reading labels and much more.

We will taste test 2 wines. If you want to follow along and give us your tasting input Thursday night, purchase a bottle of

• Josh Cellars Legacy Blend should be around $14 available in many markets
• Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc - Viognier Blend $12 available Trader Joes

Product Spot Light

Found these brass caps to replace the plastic caps on one pound propane bottles when I refill them.
There were 5 caps for under $12.00. There are quite a few brands so you can shop for price or quantity.
These are Gimiton

Universal Fit - Solid Brass.
These caps will screw directly on to your 1LB propane bottles/cylinders.
Protect your threads from damage and dirt.
Keep 1 LB propane bottles/cylinders sealed completely in case of any leaks.

Fun but not something I would use on the trail.

Winebreather Carafe by Menu
for "wine aerator decanter"
$38 - 40

This elegantly designed carafe aerates your wine in one easy step.
Simply press the decanter onto the top of an opened bottle of wine and flip it over so that the wine pours into the decanter.
You can serve the wine from the decanter, or flip it back over once it's done and pour the aerated wine back into the bottle and serve from the original bottle.

There are other brands, designs and prices on Amazon.

Appreciation of good wines can be enhanced by visiting the many wineries that are increasing in number in may parts of the southwest. California is a prime location and it is no longer just a product of the northern wineries, although they are excellent. Excellent wineries are abundant in many coastal areas, and in cities like Santa Barbara, Paso Robles, and Temecula, just to name a few. Washington, Oregon, and even Idaho, offer opportunities to taste wines.

Scheduling two to three day trips is not only a good way to gain an appreciation of good wines, but a great get-away for you and your favorite wine taster! Here are just some samples of what you might see:
