OAUSA Net - November 26, 2020 - Thanksgiving

Post by DaveK » Mon Nov 23, 2020 8:17 pm

All of us at Outdoor Adventure USA wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving. Also, just a quick reminder that there will be no net this Thursday, Thanksgiving day.

While the true meaning of our American Thanksgiving sometimes gets lost amongst the turkey, the foot ball games, and the merriment of the holiday, it is an important time to remember the real meaning. For those who do not know, and for those who may have forgotten, we offer a little bit of American history. Shortly following the Revolutionary War, President George Washington, at the request of "both Houses of Congress," recommend to the People of the United States, a day of public thanksgiving and prayer. Below is that Proclamation, and we recommend it to all of our OAUSA friends.

The Rest of the Story

In 1863, some 89 years following Washington's Thanksgiving Proclamation, President Abraham Lincoln, issued his own Thanksgiving Proclamation, echoing the sentiments of Washington. It is Lincoln's Proclamation which established Thanksgiving as a National Holiday which was to take place on the fourth Thursday of every November.

It bears significant emphasis that Lincoln's Proclamation for a National day of Thanksgiving occurred in the midst of one of the most difficult times in our history. Despite all of the loss of life, the hardships, and tragedies of his time, Lincoln proclaimed that there was much for which to be thankful. Perhaps a lesson for our time.

And, now you know. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.
Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.
